ABDM: The Next Chapter of India's National Digital Health Mission
India has achieved something that no other country has attempted at this scale, building a digital health infrastructure for 1.4 billion people. When India launched the National Digital Health Mission in 2020, the immediate objective was to digitise healthcare identities and build a nationwide framework for electronic health records.
Six years later, the vision has changed into one of the world's largest digital health ecosystems. What began in 2021 as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has now grown into a nationwide Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Today, it has enabled over 96 crore ABHA accounts, linked more than 110 crore digital health records, and onboarded over 5.4 lakh health facilities, laying the foundation for healthcare interoperability at an unprecedented scale. These figures place India among the few countries attempting to achieve healthcare interoperability at a population scale.
