UnitedHealth Group Optum Strengthens AI Leadership with Shobhit Varshney's Appointment
His focus will be on improving health outcomes, reducing friction for patients and clinicians, and building a more intelligent, efficient, and responsible healthcare ecosystem.
UnitedHealth Group Optum has appointed Shobhit Varshney as its Chief AI Officer. In his new role, he will bring together the organization's AI strategy, enterprise AI platform, and AI delivery under a unified vision to accelerate the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence across the business.
Varshney will lead the development, governance, and scaling of AI across Optum and UnitedHealth Group. His focus will be on improving health outcomes, reducing friction for patients and clinicians, and building a more intelligent, efficient, and responsible healthcare ecosystem.
Before joining UnitedHealth Group Optum, Varshney served as Global Head of AI at Citi. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, he led the company's enterprise-wide AI strategy, established its AI operating model, drove enterprise transformation through agentic AI, strengthened Responsible AI governance, and built an enterprise AI Command Center for AI lifecycle management, risk monitoring, and regulatory compliance.
Earlier, he spent more than 13 years at IBM, where he held several leadership positions across consulting, Artificial Intelligence, analytics, and enterprise transformation. Most recently, he served as Head of Data & AI, Vice President & Senior Partner, leading IBM Consulting's Data, AI & Automation business across the United States, Canada, and Latin America with full P&L responsibility for a multi-billion-dollar practice.
Previously, he was Partner & Americas Head of AI, leading AI transformation programs for global organizations including PepsiCo, Elevance Health, Merck, CVS Health, American Express, Toyota, Pfizer, and AT&T. He began his IBM career as Associate Partner & Consultant, helping establish the company's AI and advanced analytics capabilities across the Americas.
Before IBM, Varshney served as Product Lead, Visualization & Analytics Group at Bloomberg, where he led the development of advanced analytics and visualization capabilities for the Bloomberg Terminal. Earlier, he worked as a Software Architect at Intel Corporation, contributing to next-generation mobile technologies and filing a patent for Intel Smart Connect Technology.
He also co-founded a green ready-mix concrete company in India, successfully growing it into a profitable manufacturing business before handing over operational leadership to his co-founder.
With more than 20 years of experience across Artificial Intelligence, healthcare, enterprise technology, financial services, consulting, product innovation, and entrepreneurship, Varshney has built expertise in large-scale AI transformation, Responsible AI governance, and business innovation.
His appointment reflects UnitedHealth Group Optum's continued commitment to using AI responsibly to improve healthcare delivery, patient experiences, and operational excellence.
