UnitedHealth Commits $4M to Expand Tennessee Health Hub Network

The commitment, announced July 29, will support the addition of eight health hub locations across the state. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center operates the network as part of efforts to bring healthcare services closer to communities.

UnitedHealth Group has committed $4 million through the United Health Foundation to expand the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s health hub network from five locations to 13 across Tennessee by the end of 2027. The expansion is expected to extend access to healthcare services to about 200,000 Tennessee residents.

The commitment, announced July 29, will support the addition of eight health hub locations across the state. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center operates the network as part of efforts to bring healthcare services closer to communities.

The planned expansion comes as UnitedHealth continues efforts to improve its financial performance following a sharp increase in medical costs in 2025. The company’s medical care ratio, which measures the share of premiums spent on medical claims, rose to 88.9% in 2025 from 85.5% in 2024. Operating earnings declined from $32 billion to $19 billion during the period.

UnitedHealth reported a medical care ratio of 86.7% for the second quarter of 2026, below analysts’ expectation of 88.5%. The company reported second-quarter revenue of $112 billion, compared with the $110.9 billion expected by analysts, while adjusted earnings per share reached $6.38 against a consensus estimate of $4.90.

Following the second-quarter results, UnitedHealth raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance to $19.50-$20, compared with its previous forecast of $18.25. The company has attributed part of its cost improvement efforts to restructuring measures, including exiting unprofitable contracts, as well as increased use of artificial intelligence to streamline processes.

The Tennessee health hub expansion represents one of the United Health Foundation’s healthcare-focused funding initiatives. Once completed, the network will have more than twice its current number of locations, increasing the number of communities that can access services through the health hub model.

The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2027 and reach approximately 200,000 residents across Tennessee.
