Telemedicine After 2020: How India’s Regulatory Framework Shaped Digital Care
Telemedicine in India is no longer simply about consulting a doctor over a phone or video call. It has become part of the country’s wider healthcare infrastructure, connecting patients and health facilities with doctors and specialists across geographical boundaries. Yet the idea itself is not new. Long before smartphones and digital health platforms entered mainstream healthcare, India was already experimenting with technology to take specialist care beyond the hospital.
The transformation became particularly significant in 2020, when the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines provided the country with a formal regulatory framework for remote consultations by Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs). The framework arrived at a critical moment, but its significance extended beyond the COVID-19 response. It gave telemedicine a defined place within professional medical practice and helped establish rules around consultation, consent, prescriptions, records and professional responsibility.
