AI-enhanced formulation technology will be integrated with Quotient Sciences’ Translational Pharmaceutics platform, which brings together drug product formulation, development and clinical activities.

Quotient Sciences, a UK-headquartered global integrated contract research, development and manufacturing organisation, and Copenhagen-based biotech Acesion Pharma have entered a collaboration to apply AI-enhanced formulation development to Acesion’s early-stage atrial fibrillation pipeline.

Under the collaboration, Quotient Sciences’ AI-enhanced formulation technology will use active machine learning and Bayesian optimisation to assess formulation data and help identify drug product options with a greater likelihood of meeting development objectives.

The approach is intended to help development teams make formulation decisions earlier, while reducing the time required to evaluate different possibilities.

The technology will be integrated with Quotient Sciences’ Translational Pharmaceutics platform, which brings together drug product formulation, development and clinical activities.

The platform has been used for more than two decades to support early-stage drug development programmes for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Dr. Andrew Lewis, Chief Scientific Officer at Quotient Sciences, said: “This collaboration with Acesion Pharma reflects exactly what our AI-enhanced formulation development solution, combined with Translational Pharmaceutics, is designed to deliver: helping our partners make better-informed, faster decisions about their drug product formulations. We’re proud to be working with Acesion on a shared commitment to innovation, and to support their pipeline in the field of atrial fibrillation.”

For Acesion Pharma, the collaboration will focus on exploring AI-supported oral formulation development for its small-molecule compounds.

The company said the approach could help accelerate development decisions, potentially shortening the path to clinical testing and supporting the development of products that meet the intended profile.

Dr. Elisabeth V. Carstensen, Vice President CMC, at Acesion Pharma said, “We are excited to, together with Quotient Sciences, explore how their AI-enhanced algorithms can help guide and accelerate oral formulation development for our small-molecule compounds. By helping to guide and accelerate development decisions, this approach has the potential to shorten timelines for clinical testing and increase the likelihood of achieving the desired product profile.”

The collaboration follows interim results reported by Quotient Sciences earlier this month from a clinical study in which its AI algorithm selected modified-release formulation compositions and doses during the trial.

The algorithm reached the predefined pharmacokinetic target within three dosing periods, meeting the study’s interim objectives.
