OpenAI Expands Biodefense Efforts with Rosalind Program & Wider Access to GPT-Rosalind

Under Rosalind Biodefense, OpenAI plans to sponsor access to GPT-Rosalind and provide support to organizations developing tools for epidemiological modeling, preparedness planning, and other public health applications.
OpenAI has launched Rosalind Biodefense, a new initiative designed to support biodefense and pandemic preparedness efforts by providing vetted developers and select public-sector organizations with access to GPT-Rosalind, its advanced life sciences AI model.
Under Rosalind Biodefense, OpenAI plans to sponsor access to GPT-Rosalind and provide support to organizations developing tools for epidemiological modeling, early detection systems, screening technologies, preparedness planning, and other public health applications.
Several organizations have already joined the program. These include Fourth Eon Biosecurity, which focuses on biological screening infrastructure; SecureDNA, which works on DNA sequence screening; and SecureBio Detection, which develops technologies aimed at identifying biological threats.
Their projects span prevention, detection, preparedness, and response activities within the biodefense ecosystem.
“We’re excited to test OpenAI’s GPT-Rosalind in Fourth Eon’s work developing AI-native biosecurity screening systems that analyze sequences and generate detailed threat assessments. Robust screening can improve the ability to detect and mitigate potentially dangerous DNA orders before they create downstream risk, strengthening prevention,” said Gary Abel, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist at Fourth Eon.
In parallel, OpenAI is expanding trusted access to GPT-Rosalind for selected U.S. government agencies and allied partners involved in public health and biodefense missions.
The model is expected to support applications such as early warning systems, outbreak response planning, diagnostics, preparedness programs, and the development of medical countermeasures.
Among the participating institutions is Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which is exploring how GPT-Rosalind can complement its work in simulation, laboratory testing, and countermeasure research.
OpenAI is also working with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory on protein-engineering applications and has extended access to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which is focused on accelerating vaccine development for epidemic and pandemic threats.
OpenAI said it will continue refining access models and safety measures as Rosalind Biodefense expands, while seeking additional partnerships aimed at improving global preparedness, public health resilience, and biodefense capabilities.
