Nourish Rolls Out Generative AI Health Assistant for 24/7 Patient Support

The AI assistant, previously available in beta, is designed to provide round-the-clock guidance on meal planning, lab results, appointment preparation and other care-related needs.

Nourish has begun the wider rollout of a generative AI-powered Health Assistant embedded in its patient app, providing personalized support between appointments based on patients’ medical records, lab results, health goals and clinical protocols.

The AI assistant, previously available in beta, is designed to provide round-the-clock guidance on meal planning, lab results, appointment preparation and other care-related needs. It also handles prescription, insurance and scheduling questions, with human escalation when required.

Nourish said about half of its active patients now engage with the Health Assistant daily. The company also reported higher patient engagement across several care activities since introducing the tool.

According to Nourish, patients with access to the assistant are completing more goals assigned by their registered dietitians and scheduling laboratory tests at twice the previous rate. Patients who receive medical care through Nourish are booking those appointments two to three times more frequently, while dietitian visit volumes have remained unchanged. Daily meal logging has increased by 15%.

The company also reported a 15% increase in patient weight loss within 30 days among users with access to the chatbot and a 30% increase over 60 days. Weight tracking increased by 20%.

The assistant uses patient-specific context to provide recommendations. For example, a patient with prediabetes can log a meal and receive feedback on its macronutrient composition, recommendations for subsequent meals and recipes aligned with their care plan. Patients can also request plain-language explanations of lab results and use the tool to prepare questions for upcoming appointments before sharing them with their dietitian.

Aidan Dewar, co-founder and CEO of Nourish, said the company redesigned the patient experience around AI after observing that its AI capabilities were producing stronger clinical outcomes than other app features.

Nourish has also developed AI tools for its dietitians. Its AI copilot provides insights from activity between sessions, including chatbot interactions and journal entries. Its “Assist” clinical decision support feature suggests areas clinicians may want to explore during appointments and is used in about half of sessions, according to the company.

The broader rollout makes the Health Assistant part of Nourish’s AI-first patient experience while retaining human clinicians in the care process.
