Karnataka’s Digital Health Journey: Strengthening Public Healthcare Through Technology
In Bengaluru, healthcare is being reimagined with AI, connected devices, digital platforms, and advanced data capabilities. A few hundred kilometres away, the fundamental challenge can be much simpler: finding a specialist. This contrast captures the paradox at the heart of Karnataka’s digital health journey, a state with one of India’s strongest technology ecosystems, yet uneven access to specialised care, infrastructure and clinical expertise across its districts.
Yet this paradox could also become Karnataka’s greatest opportunity. Few states combine technology talent, health tech innovation, life sciences expertise and public-sector scale at the same level. Bengaluru already has capabilities across AI, diagnostics, telemedicine and data science; the opportunity now is to connect them with healthcare challenges beyond the state’s major urban centres. Karnataka has moved beyond experimentation, with its e-Health expansion across 183 government hospitals, alongside telemedicine, digital referrals and national digital health initiatives, signalling a shift towards more connected public healthcare. But infrastructure alone will not close the distance between Bengaluru and the districts.
