The wider partnership builds on the India-UK Research and Innovation Memorandum of Understanding, the Technology Security Initiative and India-UK Vision 2035. Healthcare research is another area of bilateral engagement, alongside antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences, and UK Minister Jonathan Reynolds have recently inaugurated the BRIC-CDFD-ONT India Genomics Centre of Excellence in New Delhi, marking a key development in India-UK Science & Innovation Cooperation.

The centre was inaugurated on October 12, 2026, during the visit of Jonathan Reynolds, the UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Trade, to the eighth Science and Innovation Council meeting.

The inauguration took place alongside the eighth India-UK Science and Innovation Council meeting in New Delhi, where Dr. Jitendra Singh and Jonathan Reynolds reviewed progress in bilateral research partnerships and explored opportunities to translate scientific advances into practical applications.

The wider partnership builds on the India-UK Research and Innovation Memorandum of Understanding, the Technology Security Initiative and India-UK Vision 2035, supporting collaboration among research institutions, universities, industry and innovators.

Beyond genomics, the two countries are pursuing cooperation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum technologies, semiconductors, critical minerals, advanced materials, biotechnology, telecommunications and net-zero technologies.

Industry-led research and commercialisation remain central to the agenda. The Department of Science and Technology's partnership with Innovate UK supports joint industrial research and development projects focused on developing intellectual property, technologies, processes and prototypes.

Eight projects have been agreed for support in areas including advanced manufacturing, power electronics and net-zero technologies and are at different stages of implementation.

Healthcare research is another area of bilateral engagement, alongside antimicrobial resistance, agriculture, climate science, geohazards and fundamental science.

The latest meeting follows the previous India-UK Science and Innovation Council meeting held in London in 2023.

The renewed engagement places emphasis on sustained institutional partnerships and stronger links between scientific discovery, industry and technology commercialisation.

The new Centre of Excellence adds to India-UK engagement in biotechnology and provides a focal point for further scientific collaboration.
