Nearly 30 NIDAN Kendras have also been established under the initiative to expand advanced genetic testing and counselling facilities beyond metropolitan cities.
India has taken a major step towards expanding genome-based healthcare with the launch of the UMMID (Unique Methods of Management of Inherited Disorders) Programme and the launch of the UMMID Dashboard, an initiative designed to improve diagnosis, monitoring and counselling support for rare genetic disorders across the country.
Officials said the dashboard would support improved outreach and coordination among healthcare institutions implementing the initiative.
The initiative, developed by the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science & Technology, is expected to improve access to diagnosis, counselling and management for families affected by inherited disorders.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has dedicated the UMMID Programme for Rare Genetic Disorders to the nation, highlighting precision medicine and genome-based treatment as the future direction of healthcare in India.
“India is steadily entering an era where healthcare, diagnosis and treatment will increasingly become genome-based, precision-driven and individualized according to the genetic profile of every patient,” said Dr Jitendra Singh.
The Minister described rare disorders as a “silent but deeply challenging public health burden,” adding that the programme would support early detection, newborn screening, prenatal counselling and clinician training.
India’s genetic diversity, he said, makes it important to build institutional capacity for genomic diagnostics and precision healthcare.
The government also released the UMMID Compendium to strengthen programme monitoring and nationwide access to diagnostic and counselling services.
The UMMID Programme has already screened and supported nearly three lakh individuals through diagnostic and counselling services.
Nearly 30 NIDAN Kendras have also been established under the initiative to expand advanced genetic testing and counselling facilities beyond metropolitan cities into underserved and Aspirational Districts.
