Cleveland Clinic Launches Long-Term Drone Delivery Service for Prescription Medications With Zipline

The first deliveries were completed last week for eligible patients in and around Beachwood, Ohio.

Cleveland Clinic has launched a long-term drone delivery service for prescription medications in partnership with Zipline, marking what the organizations describe as the first sustained deployment of a prescription drug drone delivery program by a health system. The first deliveries were completed last week for eligible patients in and around Beachwood, Ohio.

The service currently operates from Cleveland Clinic's Beachwood Administrative Campus and covers patients within a five-mile radius. The initiative is available to patients already enrolled in the health system's home medication delivery program, with no additional charge for drone delivery. Controlled substances are excluded from the service.

The drone delivery process is designed to eliminate the need for aircraft to land at patients' homes. After a prescription is prepared, a pharmacy technician places the medication in a secure drop box. Zipline's autonomous drone retrieves the package, flies to the delivery location, and lowers the medication in a pod attached to a tether while remaining up to 300 feet above the ground. Once the package is delivered, the drone returns to its charging station.

Patients can monitor the status of their deliveries through Cleveland Clinic's patient portal, providing real-time tracking throughout the process.

The health system and Zipline said the program is expected to expand beyond prescription medications over time. Planned future use cases include the delivery of additional medications, laboratory samples, medically tailored meals, and healthcare supplies to eligible patients.

According to the organizations, the initiative is intended to improve convenience for patients who rely on home delivery services while reducing the time required to receive medications.

"This program between Cleveland Clinic and Zipline makes it easier for patients to access the medicine they need. That's one less errand to run, and more time back in people's days," said Hillary Brendzel, President of U.S. Healthcare at Zipline. "This launch is the latest milestone in Cleveland Clinic's long history of using innovation to create a better patient experience."

The partnership reflects the growing adoption of autonomous drone technology in healthcare logistics, where providers are increasingly exploring faster and more efficient methods of transporting medications, laboratory specimens, and medical supplies.
