Abridge, University of Texas System Sign Enterprise-Wide AI Agreement

The agreement, established through the university system’s UT REAL Health AI initiative, provides a framework for systemwide access to Abridge while allowing individual institutions to retain local decision-making over implementation.

Abridge has entered an enterprise-wide agreement with the University of Texas System to expand access to its ambient artificial intelligence (AI) platform across eight health institutions, building on a pilot that saw a 73% increase in recording clinicians and an 80% rise in monthly notes over the past 12 months.

The agreement, established through the university system’s UT REAL Health AI initiative, provides a framework for systemwide access to Abridge while allowing individual institutions to retain local decision-making over implementation.

The University of Texas System includes UT Southwestern Medical Center, UT Medical Branch, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Dell Medical School, UT Health Tyler, UTHealth Houston, UT Health San Antonio, and UT Health Rio Grande Valley. Its hospitals and affiliated clinics recorded nearly 11.7 million outpatient visits and more than 2 million hospital days over the last year.

Expanding Ambient AI Across Clinical Settings

Abridge’s initial pilot launched in 2025 and has involved clinicians at five locations across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department settings, spanning more than 50 medical specialties.

The platform uses ambient AI to support clinical documentation by capturing patient-clinician conversations and generating medical notes. The technology aims to reduce documentation-related administrative workload and let clinicians focus more on patient interactions.

UT REAL Health AI, established in 2025, focuses on advancing responsible AI adoption across the university system. The enterprise agreement combines systemwide access with campus-level implementation, allowing institutions to adapt deployment to their operational needs.

Peter McCaffrey, M.D., chair and vice president of UT REAL Health AI, said the partnership aims to expand clinicians’ access to ambient AI while reducing documentation-related administrative work and supporting more focused patient interactions.

Abridge CEO and co-founder Shiv Rao said the collaboration would support the integration and scaling of AI technology across the university system.

Abridge Expands Its Health System Partnerships

Abridge said its platform works with 300 of the largest and most complex health systems in the United States and is expected to support more than 100 million patient-clinician conversations in 2026.

The agreement follows the company’s recent enterprise contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which makes Abridge eligible to compete for specific task orders as the agency advances its electronic health record modernization efforts.

The company has also expanded its AI capabilities into revenue cycle operations with a pre-bill review tool designed to support clinical documentation integrity, medical coding, and revenue cycle teams.

The University of Texas System agreement adds to Abridge’s efforts to expand ambient AI deployment across large healthcare organizations.
