615-Bed Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital Begins Construction in Nagpur

Proposed infrastructure includes a blood bank, trauma and emergency facilities, radiology, operation theatres and endoscopy services.

Construction of the INR 575.79 Cr Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital at Indora in Nagpur has begun, marking a key step towards a 615-bed super-speciality healthcare and medical education facility.

The project is being developed across 7.74 acres and is scheduled for completion by June 2028.

Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital project has been in development for several years.

In October 2021, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved the upgradation of the existing hospital at Indora into a Super Speciality Institute of Medical Education and Research, with plans for postgraduate and super-speciality medical courses.

The project was subsequently sanctioned at INR 575.79 Cr through a government resolution issued in December 2023.

The project site was handed over by Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) to the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) on July 25, 2025. NMRDA is implementing the project under its commissioner, Sanjay Meena.

The facility will have nearly 9.84 lakh sq ft of built-up area and is planned to serve residents of North and Central Nagpur and surrounding areas.

The INR 575.79 Cr project is being funded jointly, with the Social Justice Department covering 75% of the expenditure and the Medical Education and Drugs Department contributing the remaining 25%.

Construction has been awarded to a contractor, with a 36-month execution period and a scheduled completion date of June 16, 2028.

Project documents indicate that INR 14.39 Cr has been released so far, while INR 569.40 Cr remains to be provided.

Proposed infrastructure includes a blood bank, mortuary, trauma and emergency facilities, radiology, operation theatres and endoscopy services.

Departments include neurology, plastic surgery and general surgery, while intensive care infrastructure will include a 43-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit and a 36-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit.

The facility will also include seven-bed neonatal and paediatric intensive care units, pathology and microbiology laboratories, administrative areas and general wards.

The fifth floor is planned for 159 beds, while the sixth, seventh and eighth floors will each accommodate 121 beds, taking the planned capacity to 615 beds.
