Walmart Launches Rural Health Ambassador Pilot With Pharmacists

The pilot will operate in Lexington, Tennessee; Caro, Michigan; Franklin, Virginia; Fort Scott, Kansas; and Searcy, Arkansas, serving rural and underserved communities.

Walmart has launched a six-month pilot program that will place pharmacists in a new “Health Ambassador” role at five rural U.S. stores, focusing on diabetes, weight management, and maternal health.

The pilot will operate in Lexington, Tennessee; Caro, Michigan; Franklin, Virginia; Fort Scott, Kansas; and Searcy, Arkansas, serving rural and underserved communities.

Under the program, Health Ambassador Associates will help customers understand their health goals, navigate available resources and connect with relevant health and wellness services. The role will also include personalized coaching and in-person conversations covering nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress management.

Walmart said the initiative builds on the accessibility of its retail and pharmacy network. Approximately 90% of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of a Walmart store or club, while about 4,000 Walmart stores are located in medically underserved areas, according to the company.

The retailer said the pilot will examine how pharmacists, who already have relationships with local communities, can provide additional support and help customers access health resources closer to where they live and shop.

“Customers already turn to Walmart for affordable food and everyday essentials, convenient services and pharmacists they know and trust,” said Emily Aaronson, M.D., Walmart U.S. chief medical officer. She said the pilot will give pharmacists dedicated time to listen, coach and connect customers with relevant support.

The initial focus on diabetes, weight management and maternal health comes as Walmart continues to expand its role in healthcare services through its retail and pharmacy footprint.

Separately, Walmart announced a partnership with SCAN Health Plan to offer a co-branded Medicare Advantage plan in two states. Subject to regulatory review and approvals, the planned offerings could include pharmacy, vision, food and over-the-counter benefits.
