Walgreens Signs MoU to Set Up First India GCC in Chennai

The facility is expected to create more than 250 technology and operational jobs in its first year, with further expansion planned.

US-based healthcare and pharmacy company Walgreens India Private Ltd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to establish its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India in Chennai. The facility is expected to create more than 250 technology and operational jobs in its first year, with further expansion planned.

The MoU was signed on September 18 in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Industries Minister S Keerthana. The new GCC will be located at the DLF Downtown Taramani complex along the government-designated Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) GCC corridor.

According to the state government, the Chennai centre will focus on technology and business services. Walgreens is expected to develop technology and business capabilities from the facility to support its enterprise operations, with phased expansion planned beyond the initial workforce.

The development comes shortly after Chief Minister Vijay returned from an official investment trip to the United Kingdom. Following his return, Vijay chaired review meetings with senior officials and department heads to assess investment commitments and their implementation.

During the review, the Chief Minister directed the Industries Department to establish clear timelines for implementing Memoranda of Understanding, including commitments secured during the UK visit. Officials said dedicated monitoring frameworks are being established to track investment commitments through to operational infrastructure.

The state government has been developing GCC corridors across Chennai as part of its efforts to attract global companies and expand high-value technology and business services. The Walgreens facility is planned within the newly designated OMR GCC corridor.

Vijay also reviewed welfare initiatives, including the Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme and the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.

Senior officials present at the MoU signing included Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, S Vijayakumar, Guidance Tamil Nadu Managing Director Deepak Jacob, Walgreens Global Competence Center Head Umapathy Viswanathan and Walgreens Director Masood Ahmed.
