Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) has announced an expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with NVIDIA, aiming to build what the companies describe as the most powerful AI factory in the life sciences industry. The initiative will strengthen the pharmaceutical company's computing capabilities to accelerate drug discovery, biomarker identification, and clinical development.

As part of the expansion, BMS will deploy NVIDIA's DGX SuperPOD powered by DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, the company's next-generation platform for large-scale AI training and inference. According to the companies, the upgraded infrastructure delivers up to ten times higher performance per megawatt compared to the system previously adopted by BMS.

Bristol Myers Squibb first implemented NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD infrastructure three years ago. The expanded deployment is expected to provide its scientific and computational teams with greater access to high-performance computing while maintaining operational efficiency and enabling larger AI workloads without a proportional increase in energy consumption.

The company said the investment supports its "hybrid intelligence" strategy, where AI systems perform complex data analysis while researchers focus on scientific interpretation and decision-making. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to support increasingly sophisticated AI models used across research and development.

"BMS has made a deliberate bet on AI, and we are beginning to see it pay off in our pipeline and operations," said Greg Meyers, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Bristol Myers Squibb. He added that expanding the company's computing capabilities with NVIDIA will provide researchers with the scale needed to advance AI-driven drug discovery and development.

The announcement builds on Bristol Myers Squibb's broader AI strategy. Earlier this year, the company entered a multi-year agreement with Anthropic to deploy its Claude AI platform across research, manufacturing, clinical development, regulatory documentation, commercial functions, and corporate operations. The company said the technology would help employees analyze large scientific and business datasets, automate workflows, and support decision-making.

The move also reflects a broader trend among pharmaceutical companies investing in AI-powered research infrastructure. Earlier this year, Eli Lilly and NVIDIA announced plans to establish an AI co-innovation lab in San Francisco with an investment of up to $1 billion over five years. Built on NVIDIA's BioNeMo platform, the facility is designed to integrate automated laboratory research with AI-driven computational workflows to accelerate drug discovery.
