Bayer Partners With Henry Ford Health to Expand Patient Access to Clinical Trials

Bayer has entered into a strategic research partnership with Henry Ford Health to expand patient access to clinical trials, combining Bayer's global drug development capabilities with Henry Ford Health's clinical research infrastructure.
The collaboration will initially focus on cardiovascular and renal diseases, oncology, and women's health while using artificial intelligence (AI), analytics, and electronic health record (EHR) data to improve trial design and patient recruitment.
The partnership aims to reduce barriers to clinical trial participation and enable patients to access investigational treatments earlier within the healthcare settings where they already receive care.
According to Henry Ford Health, the initial research areas include cardiovascular and renal conditions such as thrombosis, heart failure, stroke, and chronic kidney disease; oncology programs focused on advanced cancers and targeted therapies; and women's health, including treatments for menopausal symptoms and gynecologic conditions.
The organizations will collaborate across the entire clinical trial process, applying data-driven approaches to optimize study design and improve patient identification. The partnership also includes plans to generate real-world evidence on treatment outcomes and support innovation and workforce development in healthcare data science.
"Clinical trials are often the first opportunity patients have to access cutting-edge treatments," said Dr. David Lanfear, chief scientific officer at Henry Ford Health. He said the collaboration is intended to make clinical research more accessible, reduce participation barriers, and accelerate the development of new therapies.
Christoph Koenen, head of clinical development and operations at Bayer, said the company is working with healthcare institutions to help improve patient access to investigational treatments within local communities while advancing drug discovery.
Henry Ford Health is one of four academic health systems in the United States selected by Bayer for its strategic research model. The health system cited its integrated care network, diverse patient population, and clinical research capabilities as key factors in the collaboration.
The announcement follows Bayer's strategic alliance announced earlier this month with the University of Colorado Anschutz, UCHealth, and Children's Hospital Colorado to advance drug development and clinical trials.
The companies said the partnership is expected to expand into additional therapeutic areas over time as research programs evolve.
